Roundhouse Entry
(The mission became a lasting theme in California
With the introduction of cattle grazing and development of the Spanish rancho, the transformation of the California landscape proceeded rapidly. Helen Hunt Jackson, in her 1884 novel Ramona, described the half barbaric, half elegant, wholly generous, and free-handed life of a typical rancho.) Speaking of the alluring classical gardens with grape-covered trellises, decorated with great clay jars containing colorful plants, Jackson observed that gardens were not isolated terrains but intimate parts of the landscape in which they resided.
